This is an editor's gig. Depending how complete your manuscript is, the work I do involves different challenges. Here's an outline of what I mean by line editing, copy editing, and substantive editing. (PM for a customized quote.)
After line editing, your prose will be clear and concise. While I check each line for the redundancies, confusions, and phrasings you should avoid, I will suggest and track changes to the manuscript.
With copy editing, my work focuses on your voice and style. I will take the latest copy, to refine and revise each paragraph's grammatical consistency, along with your consistent use of vocabulary. Additionally, I will make sure your work answers to its intended publication style* and any instructions from the journal where you wish to publish.
With substantive editing, expect full notes. This involves big-picture, advisory concerns. Does the logic of the text flow well? If you haven't finished writing yet, what materials do you want to put together, and in what order? How about this point in your research design? What other advice can I offer?
* I specialize in MLA, APA and Chicago styles, for publication of research in the humanities and social sciences.
